My Caravan – Interview with Tin Box Traveller

Do you have a caravan or motorhome?

We have VW T5. Before our camper, we had a VanMaster caravan, which we bought from my parents, and before that we had a Bailey Senator Arizona.

What make/model do you have?

We modified our long-wheel base T5 for camping trips with a folding bed in the back and Kabunk bunk bed for our kids in the cab. It's not got a fitted kitchen or bathroom. We have an awning that we use as our living space when we are away.

When did you start caravanning/motorhoming?

I started caravanning with my parents when I was eight-years-old. All my childhood holidays were spent touring the UK. So when my husband and I started our own family it was a no-brainer to get a caravan.

Our first trip away together was when I was six months pregnant. Our daughters' first caravan holidays were when they were six-weeks-old and 14-days-old.

Where is your favourite place to go?

We are a bit biased because we live in the South West of England, but we love Cornwall. Pitching close to a beach or a pretty seaside village like Pentwan makes a holiday for us.

What do you like most about caravanning/motorhoming?

There are so many benefits: the ease of exploring more remote locations, holidaying in the great outdoors and staying in places where our children can play safely. You really can't beat the feeling of sitting in a field with a beautiful view and watching the kids making new friends.

What do you like least?

I can't deny that the Great British weather sometimes takes the shine off our touring holidays in the UK. But the rain never lasts long and we always pack our wellies!

What is the piece of kit you can’t do without?

Our number one piece of kit is our awning. Even when we had a caravan we rarely travelled without one. It's our living space and somewhere us adults can retreat to relax at night. We have an OLPRO Cocoon Breeze inflatable awning. It comes with sleeping compartments, where we store a lot of our other kit when onsite, and a handy extension where we can cook whatever the weather.

What is the best piece of advice you could give someone thinking about buying a caravan/motorhome?

My top advice for families looking to buy a caravan or motorhome is to consider your sleeping arrangements when you are looking at different models.

If you have young children, can you put them to bed and still have somewhere to sit in the evening? If you have teens, will the sleeping options accommodate their growing limbs?

We went through various redesigns of our caravan sleeping arrangements when my girls were between zero and five-years-old.
